Spanish Cedar is a wood with several qualities that make it ideal for exterior shutter use as well as interior applications.  It is a true hardwood unlike all other cedars; it has a straight grain similar to Honduran mahogany. These qualities make the wood much more durable and suitable to endure Louisiana climates as well as storms and hurricanes. Spanish cedar is resistant to termites, wood boring insects and the wood grain  naturally allows moisture to "breathe" out preventing it from rotting. This is one of the reasons it is the wood traditionally used for exterior shutters as well as expensive cigar Humidors.
